Discussion thread: tours-de-force

“I never knew that music like that was possible.” From Miloš Forman’s Amadeus (1984)

Nicholas Wolterstorff, in his book Art in Action, says “a tour-de-force is the achievement of something which stretches the abilities of the material to its uttermost.” Can you think of any examples? To his definition I would add the idea of an artwork that transcends its medium—that brings into actuality things which would never have been considered possible before. So, what do you think? What would you say is a “tour-de-force”? An artwork that goes beyond the ordinary limits of the craft? Comments are wide open, and I will be following the discussion live from 12:00 to 12:30 CT. Let me know what you think!
