What about the small canon of (at least) arguably Christian arthouse cinema, such as the films of Andrei Tarkovsky or Terence Malick?
Or, to use a somewhat more mainstream example, the films of former seminary student Martin Scorsese, some of which (especially Silence and The Last Temptation of Christ) have fairly explicit Christian themes?
Would one call these Christian films? Silence literally premiered at the Vatican.
Yes, these would be a mix of my categories 2, 3, and 4. Another one to put up there is Schrader's First Reformed. Those are my favorite kinds of movies. Also Doubt (I forget the director, but it has Amy Adams in it).
Not familiar with Malick's work more recent than The Tree of Life, or Tarkovsky at all; but I've heard much good about them both. The problem is, there are always so many movies to watch.
