Morris was what I'd call a good kind of avant-garde artist: he wasn't trying to "shock the bourgeoisie" as the French avant-gardists often attempted to do. He wanted to *bless* the bourgeoisie by showing them a better way.

The Arthurian Frescoes story reminds me that Leonardo had similar problems painting on walls. His Battle of Anghiari painting had much the same fate.
